International Baccalaureate mission statement

International Baccalaureate (the organisation known by the abbreviation IB) offers four high-quality and challenging educational programmes to a global community of schools, with the aim of creating a better and more peaceful world. It seeks to educate young people so they can become enquiring, knowledgeable and empathetic individuals, who help to create a better and more peaceful world with intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the IB works with schools, governments and international organisations to prepare challenging international educational programmes and strict evaluation schemes. These programmes encourage students around the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners, who understand that other people can also be in the right with their differences.

Certification as an international school and the House of Learning make Städtisches Gymnasium Olpe part of this international community, offering every student new opportunities and stimuli for living and learning in a digitised and globalised world.

The IB learner profile

The objective of the IB programme is to train internationally minded people who help to create a better and more peaceful world, being conscious of their common humanity and their shared responsibility toward this planet.

Based on the 10 values upheld by IB World Schools, as well as the subject and educational focus, IB learners become:

 

Questioners

We foster our curiosity and cultivate enquiry and research skills. We know how to learn independently and together with others. We learn with enthusiasm and preserve a lifelong love of learning.

 

Knowledgeable

We develop and make use of a conceptual understanding and examine knowledge in different subject areas. We explore issues and ideas with local and global significance.

 

Thoughtful

We apply critical and creative thinking skills to analyse complex problems and respond to them responsibly. We show initiative with regard to substantiated ethical issues and express our point of view thoughtfully and competently.

 

Communicators

We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language in a number of ways. We work effectively together and consider the views of other people and groups. We respond cautiously in all situations.

 

Principled

We act with honesty and integrity, with a good sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of other people. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

 

Impartial

We value our own cultures and personal life experiences in a critical way as well as the values and traditions of others. We look at different views, evaluate them, and are prepared to learn from our experience.

 

Caring

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We are committed to being of service to others and act to positively impact the lives of others and our environment.

 

Venturesome

We are pro-active and decisive in dealing with uncertainties and work independently as well as with others to develop new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient when we are confronted with challenges and changes.

 

Balanced

We understand what it means to balance the intellectual, physical and emotional aspects of our life in order to create a sense of well-being for ourselves and others. We recognise how connected we are to other people and to the world in which we live.

 

Reflective

We explore the world and our own ideas and experiences with circumspection. We work toward understanding our strengths and weaknesses to support our learning and personal development.
